British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, less than 24 hours after Trump criticized Starmer over what he described as Britain’s lack of support for the U.S. campaign against Iran.
According to a statement from Starmer’s office, “The leaders began by discussing the latest situation in the Middle East and the military cooperation between the UK and US through the use of RAF (Royal Air Force) bases in support of the collective self-defence of partners in the region.”
The statement did not address Trump’s recent comments on Truth Social, in which he reacted to news that Britain might send an aircraft carrier to the region, saying, “We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won!”
Starmer’s office added that the Prime Minister also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to President Trump and the American people following the deaths of six U.S. soldiers.
The two leaders expressed their intention to speak again in the near future.
