China’s top diplomat meets North Korea’s Kim, calls for closer coordination

China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has called for stronger communication and coordination with North Korea on major international and regional issues during a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang on Friday, according to an official Chinese statement.

Wang is on a two-day visit to North Korea that began on Thursday, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and amid Pyongyang’s deepening ties with Russia.

“In the face of a turbulent and complex international situation, China and North Korea should further strengthen communication and coordination on major international and regional affairs,” Wang told Kim, according to China’s foreign ministry.

North Korea’s state media KCNA reported on Saturday that Kim Jong Un also emphasized the need to expand exchanges and contacts at various levels, saying closer ties were essential to protect shared interests.

Wang also expressed China’s willingness to enhance exchanges and practical cooperation with Pyongyang, highlighting efforts to consolidate and develop bilateral relations.

During his visit, Wang met his North Korean counterpart on Thursday and pledged to maintain momentum in strengthening ties between the two countries.

KCNA separately confirmed the meeting between Kim and the Chinese foreign minister.

The diplomatic engagement comes at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics, with U.S. President Donald Trump expected to visit China next month. Trump has previously indicated interest in reviving dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
