China on Wednesday dismissed U.S. accusations that it is exerting military pressure on Taiwan, calling the claims a “complete distortion of facts” and accusing Washington of harboring “malicious intentions.”
Speaking in Beijing, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, criticized what he described as repeated attempts by certain figures in the United States to exaggerate the so-called “mainland threat.”
“Such remarks seriously distort reality and reveal malicious intent,” Chen said, reiterating that Taiwan is an internal matter for China and warning against any external interference.
China has intensified military activities around Taiwan in recent months, including multiple rounds of war games and live-fire drills. However, Beijing maintains that its actions are justified and aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty.
The comments came after the U.S. State Department last week urged China to engage in dialogue with Taiwan and cease military pressure on the island.
Tensions remain high as China continues to oppose U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, despite Washington being Taipei’s key international supporter without formal diplomatic ties.
China also reiterated its refusal to engage with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, labeling him a “separatist.” Lai has rejected Beijing’s sovereignty claims, insisting that only the people of Taiwan can determine their future.
Meanwhile, Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan’s main opposition party, called for peaceful engagement following her recent visit to Beijing, expressing hope for improved relations between China and the United States.
Despite ongoing tensions, Beijing says it prefers “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, though it has not ruled out the use of force. Chen emphasized that reunification would bring economic and social benefits to the people of Taiwan.
