Liakat Ali,Daily Tourist: National Citizens Party (NCP) leader and Comilla-4 constituency MP Hasnat Abdullah visited the residence of former Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Manjur Alam.He met Manjur Alam at his residence in the Kattali area of the city on Tuesday (April 14) afternoon.Upon receiving the news, a video of a group of young men gathering in front of Manjur Alam’s house, introducing themselves as July fighters and asking him various questions went viral on social media.In the video, they can be heard talking to each other, calling former mayor Manzoor a ‘friend of the Awami League’ and asking why Hasnat Abdullah had come to his house. They can also be seen shouting various slogans.But when asked what happened at that time, former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, Manjur Alam, told BBC Bangla, “Hasnat Abdullah Saheb had a program in Chittagong. He called me at noon after coming to Chittagong. He said he would come to my house. I invited him for lunch.”He said Hasnat Abdullah came home around 3 pm and also ate lunch.He added that some local boys gathered outside shortly after. Later, Hasnat Abdullah himself went and spoke to them and left around 5:30-6:00.In the viral video, many of the people gathered can be heard calling Manjur Alam a friend of the Awami League. In this regard, Manjur Alam said, “I don’t have any case in my name. I don’t even support the Awami League. How did I become a friend of the Awami League?” He said, “I was the mayor of BNP. Did I join the Awami League or not? I was nothing to the Awami League.” He claims that all those who came here are involved in BNP politics, and their homes are in the surrounding areas. Referring to his current position, he said, “I retired from politics after the 2015 elections. Now I am involved in social service work.”When asked whether he wants to run for mayor on behalf of the NCP in the future, Manjur Alam said, “People are whispering about it. I haven’t told anyone that I will run.”Incidentally, Manjur Alam was elected mayor of Chittagong City Corporation with the support of BNP in 2010. He served as mayor until 2015.
