The 17th death anniversary of Chattogram Development Movement leader, founder chairman of Greater Chittagong Development Movement Committee, and heroic freedom fighter Chattalbandhu Alhaj S. M. Jamal Uddin will be observed on July 18. Late S. M. Jamal Uddin was a prominent son of Madarsha village in Hathazari upazila. He was one of the pioneers of the educational awakening of the Muslim community in Chittagong, the first Muslim degree holder in Madarsha village and the second son of Hedayet Ali Master, a teacher at Chittagong Muslim High School. Losing his father just a year after his birth, he had to move forward through a difficult life struggle from childhood. He became involved in politics from his student days and played an active role in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic six-point movement. Later, he served as the Chittagong Divisional President of Sramik League, an associate organization of Bangladesh Awami League, and the Divisional Labor Secretary of Awami League. At that time, the President of Chittagong Awami League was M. A. Hannan, who read out the Declaration of Independence during the Great Liberation War. S. M. Jamal Uddin was an organizer and a brave freedom fighter in the great liberation war. He participated in the struggle against the Pakistani occupying forces at the risk of his life. After independence, under the guidance of Bangabandhu, he devoted himself to organizing labor organizations nationwide. He also faithfully fulfilled the responsibilities of the Chittagong region of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League (BAKSAL) formed by Bangabandhu. After Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with his family on August 15, 1975, when there was no atmosphere to observe a national mourning day, S. M. Jamal Uddin was still vocal in demanding justice for Bangabandhu's murder. He regularly observed the National Mourning Day on August 15 under the banner of the Greater Chittagong Unnayan Sangram Committee and played a relentless role in propagating Bangabandhu's ideals. Later, when Abdur Razzak, one of the four national leaders, reorganized BAKSAL, S. M. Jamal Uddin served as the president of Chittagong North District. In the 1979 National Parliament election, he contested from the Hathazari constituency. One of his rivals in that election was former minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud. He also ran for the post of Vice Chairman of Chittagong Municipality. He was an uncompromising, courageous and public welfare-oriented leader in politics and social activities. In his personal life, this leader, who was very simple and indifferent, involved his entire family in social and public welfare activities. He married the daughter of Shafi Mia, a descendant of Khan Bahadur Abdul Hakim Mia of the traditional Munsurabad area of Chittagong. The eldest of his two sons and two daughters is a doctor. S. M. Jamal Uddin's contribution to the development of Chittagong, regional rights, the spirit of the Liberation War and the implementation of Bangabandhu's ideals is still memorable. It is not possible to highlight all the contributions of his long political and social life in a short article. M. Jamal Uddin Smriti Parishad, have taken up day-long programs.
