The attacker then took hostages inside a nearby supermarket before being killed in a police shoot-out.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"824\">Footage circulating online appears to show police officers leaving the scene as civilians remained in danger. Ukraine\u2019s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that the officers involved have been suspended and are under investigation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"1047\">\u201cServe and protect is not just a slogan. It must be supported by appropriate professional actions,\u201d Klymenko wrote on Telegram, while cautioning against generalising the actions of two officers to the entire police force.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1249\">Zhukov said the officers \u201cfailed to assess the situation properly and left civilians in danger,\u201d describing their behaviour as \u201cunprofessional and unworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1386\">Announcing his resignation, he said: \u201cAs a combat officer, I have decided to submit my resignation from the position I currently hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1651\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also criticised the officers, saying they were present at the scene but \u201cdid not stop the murderer and fled on their own.\u201d He confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway, including a review of their previous conduct.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1849\">\u201cWe are going through a war and every day we suffer human losses from Russian strikes,\u201d Zelensky said. \u201cIt is especially painful to lose people like this, in an ordinary city, just on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1984\">Authorities said eight injured people remain in hospital, including one in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2220\">Officials have identified the attacker as a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow, who had recently been living in Kyiv\u2019s Holosiivskyi district. He previously lived in the eastern Donetsk region, an area partly under Russian control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2377\">Investigators say the weapon used in the attack was legally registered, and they are now examining how the suspect obtained or renewed his firearm licence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2532\">While shootings of this scale are rare in Kyiv despite the ongoing war with Russia, officials described the suspect\u2019s mental state as \u201cclearly unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2571\" data-end=\"2831\">Interior Minister Klymenko said there would be no mass review of gun ownership following the incident. He also expressed support for citizens\u2019 right to armed self-defence, noting that Ukrainians were permitted to own firearms under strict licensing conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2833\" data-end=\"3085\">Since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022, civilians have been allowed to carry weapons for self-defence and national resistance.
