CYPRUS \u2014 European leaders have rallied in support of Spain<\/span><\/span> following reports that the United States<\/span><\/span> considered punitive measures \u2014 including a possible suspension from NATO<\/span><\/span> \u2014 over Madrid\u2019s stance on the US-Israel military campaign against Iran.<\/p>\n

The controversy emerged after a leaked Pentagon email, first reported by Reuters, suggested Washington was exploring ways to penalize allies it believed had not sufficiently supported its operations. The email reportedly referenced Spain and raised the possibility of limiting its role within NATO structures.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/span><\/span> sought to downplay the issue, telling reporters his country was \u201cfulfilling its obligations\u201d to NATO and would respond only to official communications from Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no provision to expel a member from NATO,\u201d S\u00e1nchez noted indirectly, reflecting a broader sentiment among European leaders that the reported threat lacks legal basis.<\/p>\n

Leaders across Europe quickly dismissed the idea of any punitive action against Spain. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten<\/span><\/span> said it was \u201ccrystal clear\u201d that Spain remains a full NATO member, emphasizing that European nations are actively strengthening the alliance \u2014 a goal aligned with US interests.<\/p>\n
