Kamal Uddin —On April 14, the inauguration ceremony of the new committee of Ad Vision was held at the “Wind of Change” restaurant in Nasirabad Yakub Tower, Chittagong, and a preparatory meeting was held on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. At that meeting, I, as the keynote speaker, presented a detailed speech on the environment, climate change, tree plantation, the future of human civilization, and our moral responsibilities. The meeting was not just an organizational event; rather, it was an expression of a deep sense of human and global responsibility. In the face of the terrible environmental disaster that the world is facing today, it is important for every conscious person to raise the call to protect the environment. I said at the beginning of my speech—“Humans are not the owners of the earth, humans are the protectors of the earth. Allah Almighty has given the earth to humans as a trust. The betrayal of that trust is today taking human civilization to the brink of destruction.” One of the most talked-about words in today’s world is “climate change.” Once it was a subject of research laboratories, the agenda of international conferences, or the concerns of scientists. But now it is a reality. Every country, every city, every person in the world is feeling its impact. Various studies by the United Nations have said that the average temperature of the world has increased abnormally in the last hundred years. The ice in the polar regions is melting, the sea level is rising, and the natural cycle of weather is breaking down. In some places, terrible droughts, in some places, unusual floods, in some places, wildfires, and in others, cyclones and tidal waves are disrupting people’s lives. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world. Especially since Chittagong is a coastal region, the adverse effects of climate change are more pronounced here. Landslides, waterlogging, heavy rains, river erosion, and temperature increases – all of this seems to be nature giving a silent warning. I mentioned in the meeting – Chittagong was once a city of green hills, rivers, and trees. But today, due to unplanned urbanization, cutting down hills, filling up canals, and indiscriminate tree cutting, the ecological balance of this city has been terribly damaged. Cutting down hills is not just a crime, it is a war against nature. Destroying a hill means destroying thousands of trees, destroying biodiversity, destroying the natural structure of the soil, and destroying the safety of future generations. Every monsoon, the death of people due to landslides shows us that nature never forgives injustice. In my speech, I also highlight the importance of the environment from a religious perspective. Islam is not just a religion of prayer, fasting or worship; Islam is also a religion of nature, environment and humanity. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave great importance to environmental protection. He called tree plantation as charity. Even if the Day of Judgment comes, he ordered that if you have a sapling in your hand, you should plant it. This teaching has deep human and scientific significance. Because a tree does not only provide shade, it also provides oxygen, absorbs carbon, protects the soil, helps bring rain and becomes a shelter for countless animals. I said – “Cutting a tree does not mean just losing wood; it is killing a part of a living world.” After the arrival of Hazrat Adam (PBUH) on earth, human civilization began through agriculture and tree plantation. The relationship between the soil and humans was sacred and spiritual. People loved trees, respected rivers,Nature was seen as a mother. However, modern civilization is destroying that very nature in the name of development. Today, the rivers are polluted. The river water is becoming toxic due to industrial waste, plastic, polythene and chemical waste. The river that was once the source of human life and civilization is now becoming a symbol of death. The sky is covered with black smoke, the air in the city is becoming toxic. Children are suffering from respiratory problems, new diseases are emerging. I discuss – Allah Almighty taught people knowledge through the “pen”. That ancient pen was made of wood, and ink was a natural element. That is, the roots of human civilization’s knowledge, literature, history and culture are also intertwined with nature. Destroying nature means destroying one’s own history and future. The history of World Environment Day is also very important. In 1972, the global movement to protect the environment gained new momentum through the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden. Then June 5 was declared as World Environment Day. Today, this day is celebrated in more than a hundred countries of the world. But just observing the day is not enough; real initiatives, awareness and effective steps are needed. I especially appreciate the initiative of Ad Vision in the meeting. I especially mention the plan to plant date palm trees in Chittagong city as a timely, aesthetic and environmentally friendly initiative. Date palm trees are part of our heritage. It not only protects the environment, but also enhances the beauty of the city. I express my gratitude to Masud Rana, the leader of Ad Vision. Because many people in society are busy with business or personal success, but there are very few people who think about the future of society and the environment. Masud Rana is one of those exceptional people who has taken environmental protection as a social responsibility. I urge the new committee not to limit the environmental movement to just one event. Continuous programs should be undertaken to create environmental awareness among schools, colleges, universities, young people and the general public. Because the responsibility of protecting the future world lies on the shoulders of today’s young generation.

If young people plant trees, protect rivers, and participate in the movement to save mountains, Bangladesh will become green again. I also said in my speech that the biggest crisis in the world today is not just an economic one, but a moral one. People are losing touch with nature. In concrete cities, people are forgetting the shade of trees, children do not recognize the calls of birds, and the clear water of rivers is now becoming a topic of conversation. If we do not become aware now, future generations will not forgive us. They will ask, “Did you build civilization to destroy the world?” So now is the time to think anew. Development does not mean just multi-storey buildings; development means a habitable world. Development means clean air, safe water, green plants and maintaining the balance of nature. I call on everyone at the end of the meeting to plant at least one tree a year. Not just plant it, but take care of it like a child. A tree saves a life, provides shade to a family, keeps a city cool and secures the future of a nation. Today, the world is looking at us. Nature is waiting silently—will humans return from the path of destruction? If we really want to leave a beautiful world for future generations, then we have to take an oath now—we will protect the mountains. We will stop polluting the rivers. We will stand against the destruction of trees. We will join the movement to build a green world. Because saving the world means saving people. Saving the green means saving the future. On this eve of World Environment Day, let all of us raise our voices—“Plant trees, save nature, build a safe world for future generations.”

— Md.
