A drone strike hit a British air base in Cyprus shortly after midnight on Monday, causing limited damage and no casualties, according to Cypriot and British officials. The attack marks a significant escalation, drawing a European Union member state deeper into the conflict surrounding Iran.

The drone struck a runway at the Royal Air Force base in Akrotiri, shaking the eastern Mediterranean island, which is both a major tourist destination and home to thousands of foreign businesses. Residents in nearby areas rushed to seek shelter as the blast echoed across the region.

Senior Cypriot officials said the strike was carried out using an Iranian-made Shahed drone, most likely launched by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah from Lebanon. Officials stressed that the intended target was the British base itself, not Cyprus as a country. They added that the drone evaded detection by flying at very low altitude.

Iran and its regional allies have stepped up retaliatory attacks following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, focusing on military installations linked to Western forces.

Later on Monday, two additional drones were detected heading toward the Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri. Air raid sirens were activated and aircraft scrambled, but both drones were intercepted before reaching their target, a Cypriot government spokesperson said.

President Nikos Christodoulides said all national services were on high alert and fully operational.

Britain had recently reinforced its presence at Akrotiri in anticipation of possible U.S. military action against Iran. Although London had previously stated that its bases would not be used for offensive operations, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Sunday that the UK had agreed to a U.S. request to allow the use of its bases for “defensive” strikes.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the United States had not specifically requested access to Akrotiri but confirmed that the UK was being targeted by Iran. “We cannot ignore that,” she said.

The Akrotiri base is one of two sovereign base areas Britain retained after Cyprus gained independence in 1960. It has played key roles in past operations in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The base also hosts a critical British intelligence listening post. Approximately 7,000 British personnel and their dependents are stationed on the island.

Although the bases are considered British sovereign territory, Cypriot officials have emphasized that they expect the facilities to be used only for humanitarian purposes.

“Our country does not participate in any way and does not intend to be part of any military operation,” President Christodoulides said.

Cyprus currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency. While it is not a NATO member like the UK, the European Union’s mutual defense clause obliges member states to assist if one is attacked.

In a show of solidarity, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said Greece would defend Cyprus “with any possible means.” Athens announced it was dispatching two frigates — one equipped with an anti-drone system — along with four F-16 fighter jets to the island.
