Police have continued their investigation following a “suspicious” explosion at a residential property in Bristol that left two people dead and three others injured.
Emergency services were called to a house on Sterncourt Road in the Frenchay area at around 06:30 BST on Sunday, shortly after reports of a domestic-related incident. Moments later, an explosion occurred at the property.
A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Three others — including a man, a woman and a child — were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to Avon and Somerset Police. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the blast.
On Monday, the affected property remained sealed off as officers continued forensic examinations. A cordon was still in place, with part of the house visibly damaged, including a boarded-up window and a forensic tent set up outside.
Police said the cordon had been scaled back, allowing most evacuated residents to return home. Those still unable to access their properties are being supported by Bristol City Council.
Speaking at a press briefing, Superintendent Matt Ebbs said officers had also conducted searches at a separate address in Speedwell linked to the deceased man. He added that police are not currently seeking any other individuals in connection with the incident, though the case remains “complex and sensitive.”
As a precaution, specialist teams from the British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit carried out additional searches on Sunday.
Authorities confirmed that there was no significant damage to surrounding properties. Earlier, displaced residents had been temporarily relocated from a nearby Harvester restaurant to the Begbrook Social Club after police declared a major incident.
