“People-Centered Policing, a Safer Chattogram, and the Responsibility of Journalism: The Role of Fearless Media in Realizing SP Masud Alam’s Commitments”

The recent exchange meeting between newly appointed Chattogram District Police Superintendent Masud Alam and media professionals working in Chattogram was not merely a formal gathering; rather, it marked a significant beginning of mutual accountability, cooperation, and renewed expectations between law enforcement and the media.
At a time when concerns over crime, violence, extortion, drug trafficking, organized criminal activities, and law-and-order challenges continue to affect public confidence in Chattogram, the commitments expressed by the new Superintendent of Police have attracted considerable public attention and hope.
Speaking at the meeting held at the conference room of the Chattogram District Police Office, SP Masud Alam emphasized that maintaining law and order remains one of the district police’s highest priorities. Referring specifically to recent killings and criminal activities in Jangal Salimpur and Raozan, he announced a policy of “zero tolerance” against terrorism, murder, extortion, drugs, and all forms of organized crime.
His message was clear: “No criminal, regardless of identity or influence, will receive any leniency.”
If implemented effectively, such a commitment may strengthen public trust and contribute to restoring a sense of security among citizens. However, promises alone are never enough; their true value lies in practical implementation at the field level.
Chattogram is one of Bangladesh’s most important economic and strategic regions, home to industries, trade routes, ports, and a rapidly expanding urban population. Yet these opportunities often coexist with serious security challenges. Criminal networks, land grabbing, political violence, drug trafficking, and organized extortion have long remained concerns in different parts of the district. Therefore, the firm position taken by the new police chief has naturally generated optimism among residents.
Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, SP Masud Alam also announced special security measures to prevent theft, robbery, mugging, and criminal activities surrounding cattle markets, public gatherings, and commercial areas. Increased police patrols and intelligence surveillance, according to him, will be introduced to ensure public safety during the festive season.
Equally important was his message regarding journalists. Calling journalists the “mirror of society,” he acknowledged their vital role in exposing crime, corruption, injustice, and irregularities. He assured media professionals that no journalist should face harassment while performing professional duties and emphasized that district police would remain vigilant in this regard.
This assurance carries significance because journalists often work under pressure while reporting on crime, corruption, extortion, abuse of power, and organized criminal activities. Field-level reporting can involve risks, intimidation, and obstacles. In such circumstances, institutional respect and protection for journalists become essential for ensuring a healthy democratic environment.
During the discussion, representatives from The Tourist Newspaper & Multimedia News raised several questions regarding policing, public service, and law enforcement. Responding to these concerns, SP Masud Alam reiterated his commitment to building a more people-oriented police service, ensuring better public service delivery, maintaining law and order, and taking strict action against all forms of criminal activities without compromise.
At the same time, the responsibility of journalism remains equally important.
Fearless, responsible, and fact-based journalism plays a critical role in strengthening institutions. The role of journalists is not limited to praise, nor should it revolve around criticism alone. Their duty is to present the truth—highlighting positive achievements while also exposing failures, corruption, negligence, or misconduct wherever necessary.
A strong relationship between law enforcement and the media should never be based on compromise, but on accountability, professionalism, and public interest. When police perform effectively, their successes deserve recognition; when shortcomings arise, responsible journalism must question and investigate them.
The people of Chattogram seek a safer, fairer, and more secure society—one where law enforcement stands beside ordinary citizens, protects the vulnerable, and remains uncompromising against criminal influence.
If SP Masud Alam succeeds in turning his commitments into reality, meaningful changes may emerge in the district’s law-and-order situation. Yet such success will require more than administrative intent—it will require integrity, public participation, institutional accountability, and above all, fearless journalism committed to truth.
Because in building a safe and just society, responsible policing and independent journalism are not opponents—they are partners in public service.
