Every decision, action, and responsibility undertaken by a police officer carries implications for the lives, safety, and confidence of countless people, as well as for the image of the state itself. In the course of duty, police officers often encounter situations where no decision can satisfy everyone. A truly professional officer, however, acts not under pressure or popularity but in accordance with the law and professional responsibility. Among the recent transfers within the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, one of the most widely discussed names has undoubtedly been Zahid Nur. Having served as Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station during a period marked by controversy, public protests, and intense scrutiny, he has now been entrusted with the responsibility of leading Kotwali Police Station, one of the most important and historically significant police stations in Chattogram city. This is not merely an administrative transfer; rather, it reflects the confidence of the police administration in his professional competence, leadership, and ability to manage challenging situations. Many people still remember the events that unfolded in Patiya last year. A politically sensitive situation escalated tensions between protesters and law enforcement, placing the police station at the center of a major crisis. Demonstrations, allegations, counter-allegations, and administrative pressures created an environment that required careful and decisive management. At that critical moment, the key question facing OC Zahid Nur was whether he would yield to public pressure or uphold the rule of law while ensuring the security of the police station and public property. As the officer responsible for maintaining order, he chose to perform his duty within the legal framework available to him. His decisions may not have satisfied everyone, but the role of a police officer is not to seek popularity; it is to enforce the law and protect public safety. Those familiar with the realities of police administration understand that officers are often forced to make difficult choices, where any decision may attract criticism. The Patiya episode was one such situation. Considering the intensity of the protests and the broader circumstances, the administration eventually decided to withdraw him from the station. At the time, some attempted to portray this as a professional failure. However, as time has passed, it has become increasingly clear that the decision was largely an administrative response to an extraordinary situation rather than a reflection of personal incompetence. History repeatedly demonstrates that many capable officers face temporary criticism, yet their professional qualities ultimately define their legacy. Zahid Nur’s career appears to reflect that reality. Since assuming office, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali has emphasized accountability, professionalism, and administrative efficiency. Through the recent reshuffle of officers-in-charge, he has sent a clear message: professional competence and performance will be evaluated on the basis of actual work rather than temporary controversies. Kotwali Police Station is not just another police station. It lies at the administrative and historical heart of Chattogram city. With courts, major business establishments, densely populated neighborhoods, political activities, and several sensitive installations under its jurisdiction, Kotwali demands experienced leadership, sound judgment, crisis-management skills, and the ability to make swift decisions under pressure. Entrusting such a significant station to an officer is, in itself, a strong indication of the confidence placed in that individual by the higher authorities. Zahid Nur’s appointment clearly reflects that confidence. Drawing upon more than three decades of experience in journalism, crime analysis, and observing police administration, I believe that a public official should be evaluated based on the entirety of his professional career rather than a single isolated incident. The true measure of an officer lies in how he performs during moments of crisis, how faithfully he adheres to the law, and how courageously he fulfills his responsibilities. In Zahid Nur, I see the reflection of that professional mindset. He has worked not to gain popularity but to discharge his duties. The path of duty is rarely easy. It is often filled with criticism, challenges, and personal sacrifices. Yet it is precisely under such circumstances that genuine professionals prove their worth. His appointment to Kotwali Police Station provides him with a new opportunity to demonstrate those qualities once again. This is not merely a personal achievement; it also serves as a positive example of how professionalism and merit can be recognized within the police force. I believe that, through his experience, integrity, courage, and leadership, OC Zahid Nur will play an important role in maintaining law and order at Kotwali Police Station. At the same time, his appointment sends a meaningful message to younger police officers: temporary storms and controversies may arise, but dedication, honesty, and professional excellence ultimately prevail. The strength of every state institution depends upon the competence and integrity of the people who serve within it. The police force is no exception. For that reason, I do not view Zahid Nur’s appointment to Kotwali Police Station as a routine transfer order. Rather, I regard it as a significant recognition of professional policing, responsibility, and merit. With the passage of time, controversies fade and accusations are often forgotten. What endure are the values of integrity, courage, and commitment to duty. Zahid Nur’s new chapter at Kotwali Police Station may well become another page in that enduring history.
