Time sometimes becomes a silent teacher. It reminds us whether a piece of writing, an assessment, or an opinion about a person can withstand the test of time. Exactly one year ago on this day, I wrote an article about Aftab Uddin, the Officer in Charge of Chandgaon Police Station. At that time, he had just taken charge and had begun the difficult task of restoring discipline and professionalism in a station that was going through a challenging period. Looking back today, after a year has passed, it feels that the article was not an exaggeration. Rather, it was an honest reflection of reality. Law and order in the city of Chattogram has always been a matter of great importance. As a major port city, its economy, business activities, political dynamics, and the daily life of its citizens are closely connected with the stability of law enforcement. For police officers serving in this city, every single day presents a new challenge. After taking responsibility as the Officer in Charge of Chandgaon Police Station, Aftab Uddin embraced those challenges with courage and determination. Whether it was controlling crime, conducting anti narcotics drives, preventing robbery and snatching, or resolving public complaints quickly, he worked consistently to bring visible change. The results came quickly. In the monthly crime review meetings of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, he achieved the distinction of being selected as the Best Officer in Charge not once but five consecutive times. This recognition was not merely a personal achievement. It reflected the collective success of the entire police team of the station. However, the social reality of Bangladesh often reveals another pattern. When someone works honestly and achieves success quickly, certain vested groups attempt to spread misinformation and propaganda against that person. Aftab Uddin was not an exception to this reality. A particular circle tried to create different kinds of negative narratives against him. But one of the defining qualities of a competent administrator is the ability to evaluate work rather than individuals. The Police Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Hasib Aziz, represents exactly that kind of leadership. He consistently prioritizes competence, integrity, and professionalism. For administrative reasons, Aftab Uddin was later transferred to Bandar Police Station. Many people assumed that his performance might not remain the same in a different environment. Yet once again reality proved otherwise. After taking charge at Bandar Police Station, he continued to work with the same dedication in controlling crime and maintaining law and order. During this period, his professional competence was further recognized when he was selected to participate in an important international training program. Under a government initiative, he attended the International Police Crime Training Program in China. There he had the opportunity to closely observe modern policing systems, technology driven crime investigation methods, and international standards of law enforcement. The training, which lasted nearly a month, enriched his professional knowledge and experience significantly. After returning to the country, he resumed his responsibilities in field level policing. Later he was appointed as the Officer in Charge of Bakalia Police Station. Although his tenure there was relatively short, he was able to create a positive impact through his work. Another important chapter then began. Election periods in Bangladesh are always highly sensitive in terms of law and order. During such times, capable and responsible officers are assigned to the most critical police stations. Considering his track record and professional capability, he was appointed as the Officer in Charge of Kotwali Police Station, one of the most important police stations in Chattogram city. Kotwali Police Station represents the administrative and historical heart of the city. Many significant government offices, commercial centers, and densely populated areas fall under its jurisdiction. Serving here means facing complex situations almost every day. In terms of age or length of service, he may be relatively junior compared to some others, but his competence, intelligence, and leadership ability have made him well suited for this important responsibility. Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz recognized this capability and entrusted him with the responsibility of Kotwali Police Station. As a far sighted administrator, he understands that when capable individuals are placed in the right positions, the outcome becomes positive for the entire system. Since taking charge at Kotwali Police Station, Aftab Uddin has been working with great sincerity to maintain law and order. Especially during the sensitive election period, he has played a significant role in ensuring a peaceful environment. Under his leadership, police personnel have been working in a more coordinated and organized manner. He has taken firm measures against crime, narcotics, snatching, and other threats to public safety. Yet the greatest success of a true police officer is not only the arrest of criminals. It is the ability to gain the trust of ordinary citizens. When a citizen walks into a police station hoping for safety and justice, protecting that trust becomes the most important duty of the police. Guided by this sense of responsibility, Aftab Uddin always strives to keep the police station open, approachable, and compassionate for the people. Integrity, dedication, professionalism, and a deep sense of duty are the qualities that distinguish a truly effective police officer. The journey of Aftab Uddin over the past year clearly reflects these values. The success that began during his tenure at Chandgaon Police Station has now grown through Bandar and Bakalia and reached a new dimension at Kotwali Police Station. If Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz continues to recognize and empower capable officers in this manner, public confidence in the police will undoubtedly grow stronger and the law and order situation will stand on a more solid foundation. Looking back after a year, it seems that time itself has become a witness. The path of honest and dedicated individuals never truly stops. Despite obstacles, misinformation, or conspiracies, they continue to move forward through their competence and commitment. The journey of OC Aftab Uddin is therefore not just the story of a police officer. It is a story of integrity, courage, and professional inspiration.
May his path of continued success move forward with the same strength and dedication.
