Coast Guard operation in Karnaphuli River: Foreign cigarettes and dried fruits worth Tk 6.2 million seized, 16 arrested

Asbdul Wahed,Daily Tourist: The Coast Guard has seized a large quantity of foreign cigarettes and dried fish brought in through customs and tax evasion in Chittagong. At that time, 16 people, including two cargo boats used for smuggling, were arrested. The estimated value of the seized goods is said to be around 6.2 million taka.Coast Guard sources said that based on secret information, it was learned that a large quantity of foreign cigarettes could enter Chittagong city through the Karnaphuli River by evading customs and taxes. Based on this information, the Coast Guard Base Chittagong conducted a special operation in the area adjacent to Bridgeghat of Karnaphuli Police Station on Monday (April 13) afternoon. During the operation, two suspicious cargo boats were searched and about 300,000 packs of foreign cigarettes of various brands and 2,600 kg of dried tobacco were recovered. At the same time, 16 people involved in smuggling were arrested. Coast Guard Media Officer Lt. Commander BN Suman Al Mukit said the seized goods and detained persons have been handed over to Patenga Model Police Station for legal action.
