Residents of Havana are urging dialogue rather than confrontation with the United States, as mixed signals from U.S. President Donald Trump raise uncertainty over the future of bilateral relations.
While Washington and Havana have confirmed ongoing communications, Trump’s recent remarks—ranging from openness to talks to suggestions of possible action against Cuba—have left many Cubans both hopeful and skeptical.
On the streets of Havana, citizens expressed a clear preference for negotiations to resolve long-standing tensions between the two countries. However, many also questioned Trump’s intentions, citing his history of contradictory statements.
“I wish Trump would understand—he should leave us in peace,” said one resident, reflecting a broader sentiment among civilians who fear escalation.
The situation comes at a time of heightened strain, as the U.S. has imposed an oil blockade on Cuba following developments involving Nicolas Maduro, a key ally of Havana. The measures have deepened economic hardship on the island, contributing to fuel shortages, power outages, and declining living conditions.
Despite government messaging promoting military readiness under its “War of the Entire People” strategy, many Cubans say they are unprepared for conflict and strongly oppose the prospect of war.
Instead, citizens are calling for a diplomatic solution. Some pointed to examples of regional leaders opting for cooperation over confrontation, emphasizing that dialogue remains the best path forward.
At the same time, distrust of Washington persists. Many Cubans blame decades-long U.S. sanctions—among the longest-running in the world—for the country’s ongoing economic struggles, which have worsened amid tighter fuel restrictions.
As tensions continue to rise, the voices from Havana highlight a consistent message: while political rhetoric intensifies, ordinary Cubans are hoping for negotiations that could ease hardships and avoid further conflict.
