A moderate earthquake struck near the Indian state of Meghalaya on Tuesday. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake had a magnitude of 4.0. Tremors were also felt in Sylhet in Bangladesh.
In a statement, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the earthquake struck at 5:32 pm on Tuesday (February 10). Its magnitude was four on the Richter scale. The statement, signed by Assistant Meteorologist Farzana Sultana, said the earthquake struck at 5:32 pm. Its epicenter was Gowainghat in Sylhet, which is 214 km away from the Dhaka Earthquake Observation and Research Center.
On the other hand, according to EMSC, the earthquake occurred on Tuesday (February 10) at 5:02 PM local time in India. Its epicenter was in the Meghalaya region, at a depth of about 10 kilometers below the surface. The epicenter was about 124 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Guwahati in India and about 21 kilometers north of the city of Sylhet in Bangladesh.
The tremors of the earthquake were felt in northeastern India as well as in Sylhet and surrounding areas in Bangladesh. However, no damage or casualties have been reported so far.
The local administration said the situation is being monitored and the general public has been advised not to panic and to remain alert.
