The European Union has begun adapting its foreign policy approach in response to what it sees as increasing unpredictability from the United States, according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
Speaking in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, Kallas said the shift comes one year after Donald Trump returned to the White House. While reaffirming that the EU remains a close ally of the United States, she acknowledged growing uncertainty over recent U.S. actions.
“Of course, we are allies with America, but we don’t really understand their moves recently,” Kallas said.
She emphasized that unpredictability has now become a key factor in the EU’s strategic calculations. “It is pretty clear after this one year that the word we have to take into account is unpredictability,” she noted.
Kallas added that the EU is learning to stay composed and focused despite the shifting landscape. “We are now more calm because we are expecting unpredictable things to happen all the time, and take it as it is,” she said.
Her remarks reflect a broader effort within the EU to maintain stability and consistency in its foreign policy amid evolving transatlantic dynamics.
