Action-packed dark comedy One Battle After Another led the nominations for this year’s BAFTA Film Awards on Tuesday, with vampire thriller Sinners also receiving widespread recognition at Britain’s premier movie honors.
One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a washed-up revolutionary whose daughter is kidnapped, received 14 nominations. Five of these were for its cast, including DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, who plays his daughter, in the leading acting categories. Supporting actor nods went to co-stars Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro. The film also earned a Best Director nomination for Paul Thomas Anderson and is in contention for the top prize, Best Film, alongside Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value.
Sinners, which celebrates blues music and Black culture in the Segregation-era U.S. South, earned 13 nominations. Michael B. Jordan received a nod for playing twins who return to their hometown to open a juke joint. Director Ryan Coogler was recognized in the Best Director and Original Screenplay categories, while Wunmi Mosaku received a supporting actress nomination.
Hamnet, a dramatization of William Shakespeare’s relationship with his wife Agnes and the loss of their son, followed with 11 nominations. Jessie Buckley is up for Leading Actress for portraying Agnes Hathaway, and Paul Mescal received a Supporting Actor nod for playing Shakespeare. Chloe Zhao is the only woman nominated in the Best Director category. Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling 2020 novel, the film explores the couple’s love story and grief over Hamnet’s death, which inspires Shakespeare to write Hamlet.
In the Best Director category, Anderson and Coogler face competition from Zhao, Josh Safdie for the table tennis drama Marty Supreme, Yorgos Lanthimos for Bugonia, and Joachim Trier for Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value.
Marty Supreme also secured 11 nominations, including an expected nod for Timothée Chalamet in the title role.
The Leading Actor category includes Robert Aramayo (I Swear), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), whose character kidnaps a female pharmaceuticals boss played by Emma Stone, believing she is an alien. Stone was nominated for Leading Actress, alongside Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value).
Notably, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were excluded from the acting categories for their performances in Wicked: For Good. The musical sequel received only nominations for Costume Design and Makeup & Hair—better than the Academy Awards, where it received no nods. Its predecessor had earned seven BAFTA nominations.
