AKM Aliullah Haque, General Secretary of the Consumer-Gas Pipeline Construction Contractors Federation of Bangladesh, has called for immediate intervention in an open letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to resolve the long-running problem of residential gas connections. The open letter claims that in 2015, about 215,000 residential customers were charged for connection fees and deposits through demand notes issued by 06 subsidiary companies under Petrobangla, but despite a long time, they have not yet received gas connections. It is mentioned that the contractors concerned have been waiting for the completion of the connection process for the last 11 years. However, according to the 2024 government policy (Gazette), there is a provision to provide gas connections within 18 working days after settling the application. The letter also says that marginal contractors are facing the dissatisfaction of customers who are angry over not getting connections. In many cases, they are being subjected to verbal abuse, insults and mistreatment, which has made their normal lives difficult. The organization claims that if 215,000 customers in the serial are given gas connections, the country’s total daily gas consumption will increase by only 1 percent. In addition, the government’s revenue will increase and the trend of illegal gas connections will also decrease. In this situation, the Frontier Gas Pipeline Construction Contractors Federation has called on the concerned authorities to take the initiative to provide residential gas connections quickly, considering the matter from a humanitarian perspective. The organization says that a single government order can end the long-standing suffering of lakhs of customers and thousands of contractor families.
