At least 104 people identified as political prisoners have been released in Venezuela, the head of a leading rights organisation said on Sunday, as part of an ongoing process to free detainees, many held since protests over the disputed 2024 presidential election.
The prisoners were freed from jails across the country, and more releases are believed to be continuing, Alfredo Romero, director of Caracas‑based human rights group Foro Penal, wrote on social media platform X. He called on the government to publish official lists of those freed.
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, said on Friday that a total of 626 people have been released so far, but did not offer a detailed timeline for those releases. Foro Penal had previously verified only 156 political prisoner releases in Venezuela since January 8.
Rodriguez said she plans to speak with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk to request that the U.N. verify the lists of individuals released so far.
