BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as the Prime Minister. President Md. Shahabuddin administered the oath to him at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at around 4:15 pm on Tuesday (February 17).
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, members of parliament took the oath. First, MPs elected from the BNP took the oath. Then, members of the 11-party alliance, independents and other parliamentarians took the oath. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to all of them.
Immediately after taking oath as MPs, Jamaat leaders took the oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council in the second phase. However, independent MP Rumin Farhana and BNP’s Ishraq Hossain were seen leaving the meeting room before the second oath.
Meanwhile, the newly elected members of parliament of the BNP took the oath but did not take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council. This has created uncertainty and confusion regarding the oath-taking of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat.
Regarding the reason for not taking the oath in the Constitutional Reform Council, Salahuddin Ahmed, the elected member of parliament of BNP from Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency, said, “None of us were elected as members of the Constitutional Reform Council. If the matter is constitutionally accepted in the National Parliament, steps can be taken in this regard.”
