Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton Wins Democratic Primary for Durbin’s Senate Seat

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by longtime lawmaker Dick Durbin, positioning her as the frontrunner in November’s general election in the heavily Democratic state.

Stratton, 60, defeated a crowded field of 10 candidates in Tuesday’s primary, including U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly. She had the backing of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and was widely seen as the most progressive among the leading contenders.

During her campaign, Stratton advocated raising the federal minimum wage to $25 per hour and called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing concerns over deportation practices in cities like Chicago.

“Courage will bring this fight straight to Donald Trump’s door,” Stratton told supporters, drawing loud applause when she reiterated her stance to dismantle ICE.

Her victory comes as Democrats aim to center upcoming midterm campaigns on cost-of-living concerns, arguing that President Donald Trump has not adequately addressed rising prices for essentials such as food, fuel, healthcare, and childcare.

Krishnamoorthi, who finished second, called for party unity behind Stratton and praised Durbin’s legacy, particularly his long-standing efforts on immigration reform and protections for “Dreamers.”

If elected in November, Stratton would become one of a record number of Black senators in U.S. history, assuming the re-election of Cory Booker.

On the Republican side, former Illinois GOP chairman Don Tracy is projected to be the party’s nominee.

The race is part of a broader generational shift in Illinois politics, with several longtime lawmakers stepping down. However, analysts say the state’s strong Democratic lean makes it unlikely to be competitive in the general election.

Immigration policy played a central role in the primary campaign, particularly amid heightened enforcement actions and protests tied to the Trump administration’s deportation policies. Stratton’s more progressive stance on the issue distinguished her from rivals, with differing views among candidates on whether to reform or dismantle ICE.

Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, but political analysts suggest Democrats have a strong chance of regaining control of the House, while the Senate remains more challenging terrain.

The Illinois primary results reflect both ideological divisions within the Democratic Party and a broader push toward new leadership ahead of a crucial election cycle.
