Chennai Super Kings’ inconsistent Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign has suffered another setback after teenage batter Ayush Mhatre sustained a hamstring tear, an injury that could rule him out for an extended period. The 18-year-old has been Chennai’s most productive batter this season, but the five-time champions slipped to seventh place in the 10-team table following their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday. Mhatre looked in fine form during the match, scoring a quick 30 off 12 balls, before pulling up with a hamstring issue. He required lengthy on-field treatment and later struggled to continue. “Obviously a hamstring tear. I don’t know how bad it is,” Chennai batting coach Mike Hussey told reporters after the match. “We’ll get him scanned probably tomorrow or the next day. It looks pretty bad, unfortunately, and he’s going to be a big loss because he’s been in really nice touch for us.” Mhatre has scored 201 runs in six innings this season at a strike rate of over 177, making him a key figure in Chennai’s top order. Despite the setback, Hussey said the injury could open opportunities for other squad members. “He’s an exciting young talent, but it’s going to give someone else an opportunity. That’s exciting as well,” he said. “We’ve got some really good players who haven’t had a chance yet. As disappointed as we are to lose Ayush, it’s also a chance for someone new to step up.” Chennai Super Kings will next face Mumbai Indians on Thursday as they look to recover from both their loss and the blow of losing one of their emerging stars.
