Germany has described the United States’ decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from its territory as “foreseeable,” amid warnings from former US President Donald Trump of even deeper military cuts in Europe.
Speaking to the DPA news agency, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the presence of American forces in Europe—particularly in Germany—remains beneficial for both sides. “The presence of American soldiers in Europe is in our interest and also in the interest of the US,” he said.
NATO is now seeking clarification from Washington regarding the decision. Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed that discussions are ongoing to understand the scope and implications of the move.
Trump, when questioned about the withdrawal, signaled that further reductions could follow. “We’re going to cut way down, and we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000,” he said, without offering additional details.
The move comes shortly after Trump criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over remarks suggesting the US had been “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators during the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The dispute has further strained transatlantic relations.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, the troop withdrawal follows a comprehensive review of operational needs and conditions on the ground. The United States currently maintains more than 36,000 troops in Germany—its largest military presence in Europe.
Trump has also floated the idea of reducing US forces in other European countries, including Italy and Spain, as part of a broader strategy to shift military focus toward the Indo-Pacific region.
The decision has raised concerns within NATO’s 32-member alliance about potential weakening of collective security. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that internal divisions pose a greater threat than external enemies, urging allies to take action to preserve unity.
In Washington, senior Republican lawmakers Roger Wicker and Mike Rogers expressed concern over the withdrawal, arguing that maintaining a strong military presence in Europe is vital for deterrence.
Pistorius also acknowledged that Europe must take on greater responsibility for its own defense. Germany has significantly increased military spending in recent years and is projected to allocate €105.8 billion to defense by 2027—bringing total defense expenditure to around 3.1% of GDP.
Meanwhile, NATO officials say the latest US move underscores the need for European nations to boost defense investment and share more responsibility for regional security.
The latest tensions between Trump and Merz were triggered by comments in which the German leader questioned US strategy and accused Iran of outmaneuvering American diplomacy. Trump responded sharply, accusing Merz of misunderstanding key security issues.
The troop withdrawal, reportedly ordered by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, is expected to be completed within six to twelve months.
The development comes amid wider geopolitical tensions, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz following military actions involving Iran, further complicating global security dynamics.
