Authorities in Canada have tightened security around diplomatic buildings after gunshots were fired at the United States Consulate General Toronto early Tuesday morning.

Police said officers responded to the consulate in Toronto at around 5:30 a.m., where they discovered spent shell casings and damage to the building. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Chief Superintendent Chris Leather of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said security would be increased around U.S. and Israeli diplomatic sites in Toronto and at their embassies in Ottawa. Officials described the shooting as a potential national security incident.

According to Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, witnesses reported that two suspects stepped out of a white SUV near the consulate around 4:30 a.m., fired several handgun shots at the front of the building and then fled the scene.

Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the attack, calling it a “reprehensible act of violence and intimidation.” In a statement posted on X, he said authorities would work to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The consulate shooting follows several other security incidents in the Toronto area. Last week, gunshots were fired at synagogues on three separate occasions. While no one was injured, police said it is too early to determine whether the incidents are connected.

The United States Department of State confirmed it was aware of the situation and is closely coordinating with Canadian law enforcement authorities.

Security concerns have also emerged internationally. On Sunday, an improvised explosive device detonated near the United States Embassy Oslo in Oslo, and police there are still searching for a suspect.

Meanwhile, in New York City, two men were charged with terrorism after allegedly throwing a homemade explosive device at anti-Islam protesters over the weekend.

Authorities say investigations into the Toronto shooting are ongoing, as police work to identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the attack.
