India’s largest low-cost airline IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a major leadership shift following recent operational challenges.
Walsh, who currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will step down from his role on July 31 and is expected to take charge at IndiGo by early August, the airline said in an official statement.
The appointment comes just weeks after former CEO Pieter Elbers resigned abruptly amid scrutiny over operational failures. The airline faced heavy criticism after cancelling more than 4,500 flights in December—its worst crisis in two decades.
India’s aviation regulators later reprimanded Elbers for what they described as “inadequate oversight” of flight operations and crisis management, particularly concerning pilot rest and duty planning.
Following his departure, IndiGo’s co-founder Rahul Bhatia temporarily took over leadership responsibilities.
Walsh brings decades of experience in the global aviation industry. He began his career as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979 and later became its CEO in 2001. In 2005, he was appointed chief executive of British Airways, where he played a key role in shaping the airline’s modern operations.
Since April 2021, Walsh has led IATA, representing airlines worldwide during one of the industry’s most turbulent periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic recovery.
IndiGo currently holds around 65% of India’s domestic aviation market, making it a dominant player in one of the world’s fastest-growing air travel sectors.
Industry analysts say Walsh’s appointment signals a move to strengthen operational discipline and restore confidence following recent disruptions.
With his extensive leadership background, Walsh is expected to guide IndiGo through its next phase of expansion while addressing operational resilience and regulatory compliance.
