Volkswagen’s SEAT division said on Tuesday that the European Commission has approved a request to exempt the Cupra Tavascan — an electric SUV coupe built in China and exported to Europe — from European Union import duties.
A company spokesperson said the exemption was granted under an agreement that includes a minimum import price and an annual import quota, though no further details were disclosed.
The decision follows months of negotiations between Volkswagen and EU officials in Brussels over a solution for the model.
Under EU rules, automakers are allowed to negotiate tariff exemptions for individual electric vehicle models imported from China into the bloc, provided certain conditions are met.
The Cupra Tavascan is one of several China-produced electric models sold in Europe, and the approval comes amid heightened EU scrutiny of Chinese EV imports.
