The successive reshuffles in the posts of Officer-in-Charge (OC) in the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) have now become a topic of discussion across the city. In the second phase, the OCs of three important police stations have been changed in just two days. Earlier, after major reshuffles were brought to five police stations, the incident of a newly appointed officer being transferred again after just three days has also caught the attention of the police administration and the general public. An office order signed by CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali brought new changes to the posts of OCs of Kotwali, Karnaphuli and Sadarghat police stations on Wednesday (June 17) night. Although the order was not officially released to the media, several responsible sources in the CMP confirmed the matter. The OC of Kotwali police station, known as the heart of the city, Md. Aftab Uddin, has been attached to the police lines. Abu Zayed Mohammad Nazmun Noor has been given the responsibility in his place. Discussions have already started on how effective the new leadership can play in this administrative, business and politically important police station. The most discussed incident is the reshuffle in the post of OC of Karnaphuli Police Station. Just three days ago, Kazi Masud Ibne Anwar had taken charge as OC from CTTC. But within a short time of taking charge, he was taken back to the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit. In his place, Inspector Md. Ikhtiar Uddin of the Counter Terrorism Unit has been given the responsibility as the new OC of Karnaphuli Police Station. Such a quick decision-making within the police administration is not common. As a result, discussions have started in various quarters about whether there is any special administrative plan surrounding Karnaphuli Police Station. However, no CMP official has agreed to make an official comment on the matter. In the same order, Sadarghat Police Station OC Kazi Md. Mahfuz Hasan Siddiqui has also been attached to the Police Lines. Inspector Mohammad Sharif of the Estate Branch has been given the responsibility in his place. Sadarghat police station is considered one of the most important police stations in the city due to various commercial and law and order reasons related to Chittagong Port. Earlier, on Monday (June 15), a major reshuffle was made in five police stations of CMP. According to the order, Karnaphuli Police Station OC Md. Shahinur Alam was transferred to Double Mooring Police Station, Double Mooring Police Station OC Jamal Uddin Khan to CTTC and Khulshi Police Station OC Mohammad Solaiman was attached to the same unit. CTTC Inspector Mozammel Haque was given the responsibility of Khulshi Police Station OC. Besides, Chawkbazar Police Station OC Babul Azad was transferred to DB South Division. Chandgaon Police Station OC Nur Hossain Mamun was posted to Chawkbazar Police Station and DB South Inspector Jasim Uddin was posted as Chandgaon Police Station OC. According to observers, such a reorganization may have been recently carried out to ensure more effective leadership in crime control, anti-drug operations, traffic management and dealing with political situations in different areas of the city. The CMP administration officially says that this is a regular administrative process, the aim of which is to keep the law and order situation more dynamic and effective. However, many are also saying that the continuity of work at the field level is disrupted due to frequent changes of OC. Understanding the overall situation of a police station, local people,An officer needs some time to coordinate with public representatives and business circles and to gain an adequate understanding of the crime circle. That is why various questions are being raised about the issue of posting and withdrawal in a very short period of time. On the other hand, a section of the administration believes that the current commissioner is implementing a special action plan to increase efficiency, accountability and professionalism in various units of the city police after assuming office. As part of that plan, skilled, smart and experienced officers are being assigned to important police stations. Only time will tell how much of a positive impact these changes will have on the law and order situation, crime control and improvement of public service standards in Chittagong Metropolitan City. However, there is no doubt about the new administrative dynamics that have been created within the CMP as a result of one change after another. Now, the expectations of the city residents are that whoever is in charge, the police force will set the highest example of their professionalism by suppressing crime, ensuring public safety and gaining the trust of the people.
