
The main promise of the Intelbras MFR2040 is to replace keys and even fingerprints with something more difficult to copy: the vein pattern of the palm of the hand . During our tests, we put this system to the test to understand if it is truly secure, fast, and reliable in daily use.
The lock also offers unlocking via password and tags, but it was the palm recognition that stood out the most. I tested the device in standalone mode, without app integration, and all methods available directly on the lock responded quickly.
Palm reading is fast and accurate.
Unlike a fingerprint sensor, the MFR2040 analyzes the vein pattern in the palm of the hand . Therefore, there is no need to touch the reader. Simply place your hand in front of the lock.
According to the manual, the recommended distance is between 10 and 15 centimeters . This was also confirmed in practice. When I brought my hand too close, the reading didn’t work, but simply respecting this distance meant that unlocking almost always happened in a fraction of a second .
The accuracy was also noteworthy. I asked other people to try opening the door, but none of them succeeded . I also tested it with my left hand, which wasn’t registered, and the lock refused access, even though the hand belonged to the same person.
With the correct palm position, recognition worked even with a wet hand . There was also no difficulty when I positioned it slightly to the side. The reading only failed when I left my hand upside down or turned too far.
This provides sufficient leeway to use the feature naturally, without compromising security. The lock does not require a perfectly straight position, but it also does not accept any hand orientation .
The MFR2040 allows you to register up to 50 different palms , which should easily meet the needs of a large family or even environments with multiple authorized users.
Tags work well, but the reader is small.
The kit also includes unlocking tags in two formats . One functions as a keychain, while the other has 3M tape and can be attached to a wallet or card.
In both cases, the door opened almost immediately. My only reservation is the size of the reader , which occupies a small area of the keyboard. It is necessary to place the tag exactly over the corresponding icon.
With the key fob, this isn’t a problem at all. Since the tag is already in hand, it’s easy to point it in the right place and open the door.
The experience becomes a little less practical with the adhesive tag . In my tests, it didn’t work when it was inside the wallet. It was necessary to stick it on the outside and bring the tag area exactly close to the reader.
Therefore, she can transform the wallet into a kind of key, but it’s not enough to just bring it close to her in any way. It’s necessary to align the correct part with the small sensor on the lock.
The MFR2040 also features an anti-tamper alarm that triggers after several incorrect unlocking attempts. This feature helps to draw attention if someone tries to open the door repeatedly with an unregistered tag, password, or palm print.
Password unlock is immediate.
The MFR2040 also offers the most traditional method among digital locks: the numeric password . It accepts combinations of 4 to 12 digits and allows you to register up to 100 user passwords .
In addition, there is space for an administrator password and up to four passwords intended for visitors . This limit allows for clear separation of access within the house and prevents everyone from having to share the same combination.
For testing purposes, I set up a six-digit user password, in addition to the administrator password. Unlocking also occurred immediately after code confirmation .

Although it works very well, the password ended up being less practical than palm reading. Once vascular biometrics are registered, you just need to show your hand to log in, without having to memorize or type any sequence.
Not suitable for uncovered outdoor areas.
An important point to note before installation is that the Intelbras MFR2040 is not water-resistant . Therefore, it is not recommended for gates or doors installed in uncovered outdoor areas.
The manual itself makes this limitation clear: “Product suitable for indoor installation. Do not expose the appliance to sunlight, rain, or moisture.”
This means the lock must be protected from both rain and direct sunlight. Even on a partially covered door, it’s important to check if the device can withstand splashes or moisture on windy days .
Therefore, the MFR2040 makes more sense for interior doors, apartment entrances, or fully protected areas . For a gate exposed to the elements, it’s best to look for a model with specific certification against water and dust.
The application requires a separate hub.
The Intelbras MFR2040 can also offer unlocking and configuration via the app. However, this integration requires a separate hub , which was not part of my testing.
Without the accessory, the lock operates in standalone mode . In this format, all usage is concentrated on the device itself, without smart features or control via mobile phone.
This does not prevent the use of the main access methods. Palm, password, and tags remain available as normal . However, those who intend to purchase the MFR2040 for its integration with the app also need to consider the necessity of the hub.
