2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar Games, Zynga), announced this Thursday (13) the opening of a studio that “will strive to build the next blockbuster sports franchise”. The developer in question is Small Axe Studios , based in Vancouver, Canada, and led by Aaron McHardy.
The new studio was born from a project called 2K Sports Lab, described as a proposal with great ambitions to explore the future of sports games.
2K did not specify which sport Small Axe Studios will explore , but stated that it will leverage the company’s expertise “with AAA franchises such as NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA TOUR 2K.”
The studio’s logo strongly resembles a football team’s crest on a sports uniform, which may indicate that Take-Two Interactive will be navigating the treacherous waters of football in video games, currently dominated by EA Sports FC (formerly FIFA).
Not surprisingly, Small Axe Studios is seeking senior-level professionals with experience in the FIFA series , according to a job listing on the studio’s official website. Furthermore, the company is led by McHardy, who previously headed EA’s football franchise .

Electronic Arts may have to worry about the emergence of a major rival the size of 2K, especially since the company is part of the powerful Take-Two Interactive conglomerate , which includes Rockstar Games.
