Two people have been killed and at least 22 others injured after a car drove into a crowd in Leipzig, authorities in Germany confirmed.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the busy central shopping area of Grimmaische Straße. Police said the driver, a 33-year-old German man, was arrested shortly after the হামলা.
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said officials were still trying to determine the motive behind the attack, describing the घटना as a “horrific rampage.”
“We are utterly stunned by what has happened. A man has driven at high speed into the shopping area. We are currently mourning two deaths, three people with serious injuries and many others who have been injured,” Jung said.
According to police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke, the vehicle crossed Augustusplatz at around 17:35 local time before continuing along Grimmaische Street and into a crowded বাজার area.
Authorities confirmed that three of the আহত remain in critical condition. The victims who died were identified as a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man.
Michael Kretschmer, head of the state of Saxony, said the suspect had a history of mental illness. Prosecutors have launched a murder and attempted murder investigation but stated there is currently no evidence of a political or religious motive.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos. One witness told local media she heard a loud bang before seeing the car speeding through the crowded street. Others said bystanders rushed to help আহত victims and restrained the driver before police arrived.
Officials said they believe the attacker acted alone and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Germany has experienced several similar vehicle-ramming incidents in recent years. In Magdeburg, a deadly attack at a Christmas market in December 2024 left multiple people dead and hundreds injured. A separate incident in Munich last year also saw dozens injured after a car was driven into a crowd.
Authorities continue to investigate the Leipzig attack as the city mourns the victims.
